The Legend of Lawton He-Coon

Dear One,

Before recent brain research reports were made public, we didn't know how right we were to describe a child who was quick to learn as being "bright." Intuitively, we thought that reading stories to your child was just being a good parent. Now brightly colored photographs of CAT scans are appearing in popular news magazines showing the accelerated activity of the brain when an infant is stimulated. Researchers can measure the benefit that reading to your child will make in the development of his/her mental capacity.

Like the farmer who nurtures his seed crop for a future fruitful yield, my husband believed that a public policy of caring for children would steadily improve our quality of life.

This book, The Legend of Lawton He-Coon, was given to the Lawton Chiles Foundation by its author and illustrator, Kimberly Moore, in memory of the late Governor. I hope, as he would, that you and your young one will enjoy it.

Most Sincerely,

Rhea Chiles
(Mrs. Lawton)
